Course Description Wood decay and biomechanical instability are major contributors to tree failure but can be difficult to detect and evaluate. This course reviews the biology of wood decay fungi, methods for identifying external and internal signs, and the application of biomechanics to predict failure potential. Case studies and diagnostic tools (resistographs, sonic tomography, visual inspection) will be discussed to provide arborists with practical approaches for evaluating hidden risks.

Course Description Arborists face a growing array of new, expanding, and potential epidemic tree health threats. This course provides an advanced look at emerging insects, pathogens, and invasive species that may shape the future of tree care. Participants will learn to recognize early signs of invasive pests, expanding fungal and bacterial diseases, and shifts in pest pressure. Emphasis will be placed on diagnostic tools, laboratory testing, and monitoring technologies, as well as treatment and prevention strategies including integrated pest management (IPM), cultural practices, biological controls, and chemical options.

Course Description Urban trees face mounting stress from hotter summers, extended dry periods, and increasingly intense storm events. Broader resilience tools— including species diversification, improved planting systems, and site design innovations— will also be addressed. The course highlights how both municipal forestry programs and private tree care companies play critical roles in preparing urban forests for environmental stress, focusing on applied arboriculture and measurable outcomes without political framing.
